NHL Power Rankings – March 10

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning– J.T. Miller has been a fantastic addition providing 5 points in 5 games since being traded over from the Rangers. With defenseman Ryan McDonagh prepared to make his Lightning debut soon, the best team in the NHL will get much stronger.
  2. Nashville Predators– The Predators are the NHL’s hottest team currently riding a 10 game winning streak. Pekka Rinne has been one of the best, if not the best goalie in hockey with his .928 save percentage and 2.28 goals against.
  3. Boston Bruins– The Bruins are missing two of their best players in forward Patrice Bergeron and young defenseman Charlie McAvoy, but Brad Marchand has been terrific propelling Boston to a five game winning streak.
  4. Winnipeg Jets– Patrik Laine continues to be one of the best goal scorers in hockey, and Paul Stastny has provided excellent play with 6 points in 5 games since being traded over from the Blues.
  5. Vegas Golden Knights– Vegas continues to be the biggest surprise in the NHL as an expansion team as they are getting contributions from just about everyone.
  6. Pittsburgh Penguins– After a slow start to the season, the Penguins are playing like we all expected. As long as this team has Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, they will be contenders.
  7. Minnesota Wild– Eric Staal’s 36 goal resurgence has been huge in helping the Wild to the 7th best record in the NHL.
  8. Toronto Maple Leafs– The Leafs are lucky star forward Auston Matthews won’t be out too much longer due to injury. Mitch Marner has been terrific in his absence.
  9. Washington Capitals– Washington has been brutal as of late. The Caps look extremely uninspiring and if this trend continues, expect another early playoff exit come this spring.
  10. San Jose Sharks– Evander Kane has provided a nice spark to the San Jose offense since being traded over from Buffalo providing 5 points in 4 games. They also have the NHL’s best penalty kill, something that will be crucial come playoff time.
  11. Philadelphia Flyers– Goaltending will be the key for this team down the stretch. With Brian Elliot and Michal Neuvirth out with injuries, they’ll need better play from Petr Mrazek if they want to make noise in the playoffs.
  12. Dallas Stars– Forward Tyler Seguin and defenseman John Klingberg have been vital for the Stars. They’ll need better play from their bottom six forwards in pursuit of their playoff push.
  13. Anaheim Ducks– Ducks fans were extremely disappointed with the teams lack of moves at the trade deadline, but the team has been extremely hot posting a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games.
  14. Los Angeles Kings– Getting Jeff Carter back from injury has been a nice boost for a Kings team who is looking to get back into the playoffs.
  15. Colorado Avalanche– Like Vegas, the Avalanche have been one of the biggest surprises in the NHL coming off having the worst record in the league. Young forward Nathan MacKinnon has been nothing short of spectacular with 79 points in 59 games.
  16. Florida Panthers– The Panthers have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL as of late riding a 7-2-1 record in their past 10 games. Games in hand will be a huge factor for a team that is a few points out of a playoff spot.
  17. New Jersey Devils– Michael Grabner has been an extremely disappointing deadline acquisition, not recording a point in 7 games. The Blue Jackets and Panthers are closing the gap on the struggling Devils.
  18. Columbus Blue Jackets– Sergei Bobrovsky is providing excellent goaltending posting a .932 Save Percentage while the Blue Jackets have been playing better as of late.
  19. St. Louis Blues– The Blues have been brutal with a 1-7-2 record in their past 10 games. With this current trend, it looks as though St. Louis will miss the playoffs.
  20. Calgary Flames– It’s a crucial year for Calgary to make the playoffs. Without their 1st or 2nd round pick after losing them in a trade to acquire Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders, it would be tough to not have a lottery pick in this years draft. The Flames currently sit 1 point out of a playoff spot.
  21. Carolina Hurricanes– The Hurricanes made some waves around the NHL after demoting GM Ron Francis. Poor goaltending has Carolina just outside of a playoff spot.
  22. Chicago Blackhawks– It’s weird seeing the Blackhawks this low in the power rankings after years of dominance. But, for the first time in awhile the Blackhawks will be on the outside looking in with a lottery pick.
  23. New York Rangers– Ryan Spooner has been a pleasant surprise with 10 points in 6 games after being a throw in in the Rick Nash trade.
  24. New York Islanders– Garth Snow’s arrogance and ineptitude to make a trade at the deadline has put the Islanders in yet again, another disappointing season as the team rides an 8 game losing streak. The looming free agency of star John Tavares will be a crucial moment in franchise history.
  25. Edmonton Oilers– It’s shame the Oilers and GM Peter Chiarelli are wasting an unbelievable year from Connor McDavid.
  26. Detroit Red Wings– Dylan Larkin has been terrific this year leading the team with 49 points. The rest of the team, not so great.
  27. Montreal Canadiens– They better hope John Tavares is available this off season because Montreal is seriously lacking a #1 center.
  28. Arizona Coyotes– The Yotes have been on a roll lately with a 7-2-1 record in their last 10. It’s nice to see for a team that is hoping to contend next year.
  29. Buffalo Sabres– Jack Eichel and Ryan O’Reilly have been the two bright spots on their roster. Other than that, the Sabres will be crossing their fingers to land the 1st overall pick in the draft with the hopes of getting stud defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.
  30. Vancouver Canucks– Star rookie Brock Boeser looks to be out for the year after a big time hit by Cal Clutterbuck. Other than Boeser, there’s not much to be excited about in Vancouver.
  31. Ottawa Senators– They went all in for Matt Duchene thinking they would be a contender, but have been nothing short of brutal. The Erik Karlsson saga will be interesting this summer as they can gain a ton of assets by trading him at the draft.
